White Island

The stone carvings on White Island are breathtaking. No one knows precisely how old they are, because carbon dating will tell you how old the rock is, not the carving, but they certainly have their origins in days when you only needed three keystrokes to enter the year. White Island is a national treasure - treat it with respect.

View westwards from White Island public jetty (room for about 5 cruisers), showing the approach to the island.

A mere 20 paces from the jetty, one crosses the outer wall of the ancient monastery.

View of the carved figures through the inner archway.

Plaque giving details of the carvings and their supposed history. Hope you can read it!
